Honed and polished are two standard surface finishes for natural stone that differ in sheen level and slip resistance: polished stone is smooth and glossy with a reflective surface, while honed stone has a matte appearance and better grip underfoot.
Stone surfaces finish in different ways depending on the abrasive grits used during milling. A polished finish applies fine grits to create a smooth, reflective surface that shows the stone's color and veining at full depth. This glossy result suits accent walls, shower surrounds, and luxury bathroom applications where light play matters. The trade-off is slip resistance. Polished stone becomes slippery when wet, which limits its use on floors and other high-traffic wet areas in most residential and commercial installations.
A honed finish uses coarser grits to stop before the full shine emerges, leaving a flat, matte surface that feels slightly textured to the touch. The stone retains its color but without the mirror effect. Honed finishes offer better traction, especially on floors and pool decks in Florida's humid climate. They also hide dust, fingerprints, and water spots better than polished surfaces. Maintenance differs slightly. Honed stone requires a sealer to repel water and stains, while polished surfaces may need more frequent resealing because liquids don't bead as effectively on the micro-textured layer.
