What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?
Porcelain and ceramic tile are both clay-based products, but porcelain is fired at higher temperatures to create greater density and lower water absorption, while ceramic tile is less dense and more porous.
Ceramic and porcelain tile both start as clay materials but diverge in their firing process and resulting properties. Ceramic tile is fired at temperatures between 1,000 and 1,150 degrees Celsius, producing a harder surface than unglazed clay but leaving it relatively porous. Porcelain tile undergoes firing at 1,200 to 1,450 degrees Celsius, creating a denser, non-porous product.
Water absorption is the key distinction. Ceramic tile typically absorbs between 3 percent and 6 percent of its weight in water, while porcelain absorbs less than 0.5 percent.
